Euthanasia
I am replying to your article "When to Consider Euthanasia in Cats". It certainly is a tough one, and approximately a year ago I might have been answering "no, never, ever". I might my cat to go the natural way... until my own cat, Katzi, became very sick, and seemingly from one day to the next had accumulated fluid around her lungs. My veterinarian proposed the option of a thoracentesis and mechanically remove the fluid from her lungs with the prospect of her becoming better. I agreed to the costly procedure, but the success of it did not last for long. I was given the chance, however, to slowly start saying good-bye to her. And always I pondered the question, "When will I know" -- which was perfectly answered in your article. All of a sudden, my cat was unable to walk, support her own body weight, eat, and she cried with pain. This is when I had a notion. I brought her to her vet the same night and he suggested it was time. My husband was at work that night, and he wanted to be there when Katzi went, so the doctor gave her an injection to stabilize her through the night, and we knew that either she didn't make it though the night on her own or that tomorrow was the day to let her go. The morning came, and even though she was comfortable through most of the night, the pain came back, and she cried. Every time she tried getting up her legs gave out. We knew. So when we went to the vet's office, I just wrapped her in an old sweater and carried her. In the waiting room, and while my husband signed the paperwork to euthanize and cremate, she lost control of her bowels. And that is when I lost all my doubt and knew that helping her go was actually the merciful way. We were given all the time we wanted, before, throughout and afterwards, and it was a very dignified experience to have my cat go this way. Without the help and support, and encouragement of my veterinarian I wouldn't have been able to go through it. He made it possible for it to be as peaceful as possible, making the healing process for me and my husband much easier.

I am back!
Hello,
I have been away from Live Journal for a while... various reason. Mostly, probably, winter depression, but spring has finally arrived in upstate New York, and I can feel the healing effects of sunshine and warmth. So I plan to be back. Hope I still got some kitteh skillz left.

I have forever doubted. Common sense and logics convinces us not to believe. In God, or in that which is generally good. In the glass that is half full. Which in turn leaves one to be fearful, suspicious, and miserable. Hope? -- zilch. Then, one day, a tiny miracle, and you just know that God is there and watching you, and watching out FOR YOU. And I chose to believe it is not just chance. I am a happier person now. I know, and I have experienced that God's working in our lives is real. It's just about firmly believing that with God all things are possible.

'Critters' Blamed For Missing U.S. Flags
Cemetery Caretakers Blame 'Critters' For About 25 Missing Flags From Graves

NEENAH, Wis., Jun. 5, 2007
(AP) Caretakers of the Oak Hill Cemetery noticed around Memorial Day that about 25 U.S. flags were missing from the graves of military veterans. But the haphazard pattern of theft and the fact that the wooden dowels remained intact led them to only one theory in the week since _ the thieves aren't human.

"It's a pretty solid conclusion that critters are stealing our flags," said cemetery foreman Mark Alberts.

Apparently, it's been a problem all around the state. Squirrels took flags in Oshkosh and used them to line their nests a few years ago, and a groundskeeper at Forest Hill Cemetery in Eau Claire discovered dozens of missing flags in a squirrel's nest in 2006.

Alberts also said when crews cut down old trees in the cemetery, they typically find flag remnants in the hollows.

"We find a lot of flags all shredded up in there," Alberts said Tuesday. "They use them for bedding."

But Alberts hasn't caught any capers yet, only witnessing blackbirds trying to fly away with pieces of the flags.

So, I am living in 2-bedroom apartment with 2 cats, and my husband to whom I've been married for 5 years this June. He is 16 years older than me and has a physical disability. Things have been not so fortunate after he lost his full time job about a year ago and hasn't been able to find full time employment since. We've always managed to get by, with what I earn, and what he earns in disability and his part time job. Now, things really got worse when 1) a creditor took 3 months worth of payment out of his bank account to make pay off "quicker" and immediate, 2) money for the rent was gone, and 3) a report made to our new landlord making him schedule an inspection of our apartment. I though, "that's it, we're homeless". No money for rent, nowhere to go, and 2 cats to take along! We started tidying up as good as we could, but I thought they'll get us for the cats. I prayed, and prayed for God's help  in this time of despair, and for a favorable end. I asked at church if they could give financial assistance, but they have no funds. I asked my dad, but after his wife died just 3 weeks ago his finances are not even close to straight. And I prayed. And I knew that it would be ok. On the day of the inspection I took off from work to be here with my husband. In the morning, I was in my bedroom sitting on the carpet, and I thought I saw some spare change laying there, a quarter or a nickel. I picked it, and it was St. Jude. I had the medal for many, many years. Probably forgot that I had it. But he was there nonetheless because He made sure I would be ok. The landlord came, and they didn't even go upstairs. They took a brief look, said it wasn't all that bad at all, and they left. The rent is paid thanks to me being able to pitch in a substantial part because I had 8 hours of overtime coming in my pay this past Friday. And again -- I asked, and I received.

Half Light
  I had not previously heard of this movie, or that it had been in the theaters, -- until I saw it in the shelves at Blockbuster. Turns out it went straight to DVD in the US. Too bad... I saw the movie today, and I thought it wasn't actually that bad




Plot

Successful mystery novelist Rachel Carlson (Demi Moore) is devastated when her beloved seven year-old son Thomas (Beans Balawi) drowns at her Primrose Hill house. A year later, despite a record advance for her next novel, she is still too distraught to write. Her marriage to Brian (Henry Ian Cusick), an editor and struggling novelist, has disintegrated, and her best friend Sharon (Kate Isitt) arranges for her to rent a secluded cottage in the tiny and remote village of Ingonish Cove in the Scottish Highlands.

As Rachel adapts to life in the charming village, she slowly develops a relationship with Angus McCulloch (Hans Matheson), the handsome lighthouse keeper who lives and works on the deserted island off the coast.

However, just as Rachel begins to feel restored, haunting messages appear from her dead son, warning her of danger. Unsure whether the messages are real or whether she is losing her mind, Rachel is plunged into a world of madness, murder and the supernatural.

The following information has been reproduced from a White Rose Foundation pamphlet entitled 'The White Rose'.

Born on May 9, 1921, when her father was mayor of Forchtenberg am Kocher, Sophie Scholl was the fourth of five children.  At age seven she entered grade-school;  she learned easily and had a carefree childhood.

In 1930, the family moved to Ludwigsburg and two years later to Ulm, where her father had acquired a business consulting office. 
*
In 1932, Sophie started [attending] a secondary school for girls.  At the age of twelve, she joined the Hitler Youth, like most of her classmates.  Her initial enthusiasm gradually gave way to criticism.  She was aware of the dissenting political views of her father, of friends, and also of some teachers.  The political attitude now became an essential criterion in her choice of friends.  The arrest of her brothers and friends in 1937 left a strong impression on her.

She had a talent for drawing and painting and for the first time came into contact with a few so-called 'degenerate' artists.  An avid reader, she developed a growing interest philosophy and theology.  This was her alternative world to National Socialism.

In the spring of 1940, she graduated from secondary school.  The subject of her essay was 'The Hand that Moved the Cradle, Moved the World.'  Being fond of children, she became a kindergarten teacher at the Fröbel Institute in Ulm-Söflingen.  She had also chosen this kindergarten job hoping that it would be recognized as an alternate service to 'Reichsarbeitsdienst' (National Labor Service), a prerequisite to be admitted to the University.  This was an error: from spring of 1941 on, she had to serve six months of auxiliary war service as a nursery teacher in Blumberg.  The military-like regimen of the Labor Service caused her to deliberate and practice passive resistance.

In May 1942, at long last, she could enroll at the University of Munich as a student of biology and philosophy.  Her brother Hans, who was studying medicine there, introduced her to his friends.  Although this group of friends were eventually known for their political affairs, they were initially drawn together by a shared love of art, music, literature, philosophy and theology.  Hiking in the mountains, skiing and swimming were also of importance.  They often attended concerts, plays and lectures together.

In Munich Sophie met artists, writers and philosophers, particularly Carl Muth and Theodor Haecker, who were important contacts for her concern with the Christian faith.  Of foremost importance was the question of how the individual must act under dictatorship.

During the summer vacation in 1942, Sophie Scholl had to do war service in a metallurgical plant in Ulm.  At the same time, her father was serving time in prison for a critical remark about Hitler to an employee.

In the early summer of 1942, Sophie had also participated in the production of the leaflets of the White Rose and their distribution.  She was arrested on February 18, 1943, while distributing the sixth leaflet at the University of Munich.  On February 22, 1943, Sophie, her brother Hans and their friend Christoph Probst were condemned to death and executed by guillotine only a few hours later.

Just for the asking
Just for the asking... I've long know that whasoever I ask in Jesus' name will be given to me.  But it's easy to forget about that during your average busy day while stuck at your average 9-5 office job. I want to say that my senses are very sensitive and receptive towards things spiritual and things divine. Sometimes I think I can feel souls. Anyways... I got to work early this morning because I agreed to help out in a department at work that my friend runs, for overtime. So, I got to my regular job an hour early in order to be able to go over cover for my freind til 5. But gee whizzz... when I took a look at all the notes that had compiled in my mailbox I was convinced a was going to be without a job by the end of the day. I am still on probation as a biller, so I really try hard to get things right. Lately, though, I kept having mishaps, and one sheet was handed back to me with big letters on it "This is a Mess!". Once I was back at my sedk tears snuck into my eyes. Just the other day I was pulled into a meeting with my team leader and my boss to see how things are, and they pointed out to me in length how I am not as self reliant and confident as they'd wish me to be. So, I asked in an email to my team leader, who is my immediate supervisor and very much more agreeable than my boss, to meet with her in private since I needed to speak with her in confidence. Then I went to the bathroom. Once I was at the sink, staring at myself in the mirror and the water was running over my hands, I whispered, "God, please help me through this". An hour or so later, K. (my teamleader, and I will refer to her as K.) arrived, and immediately stopped at my desk, and she was ready to meet with me right away. The feeling I had after meeting with her I can only describe as that it took my breath away. My fears that seemed so real, and so dangerously imminent, were gently taken away. She encouraged me to keep doing just as I was, maybe with a little bit more thought (and with my head less sticking in the clouds). When I expressed my fear of loosing my job over not being what they expected me to be, she just laughed and cheered me up. "No, you won't loose your job!" -- A reply just for the asking. Perfect timing. Divine.

High Five!
Thanks to a hubby who works at Blockbuster, I get all kinds of previews before they hit the shelf. Today I also saw "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan". Of course, I'd heard about it and how all those people got really upset. Yes, it is anti semitic, and yes, it is full of gross and partially R> rated stuff. So, why is it funny? And how did this happen?

The movie already scored at the Golden Globes!

As shocking as some of his words may sound, they truly only uncover some people's own predjudice and hatred, or their indifference. So I agree with Mr. Cranky:
Cohen isn't attacking a race or a religion. He's satirizing bigotry. There is nothing wrong with that. It opens people's eyes to stupidity. Those who attack Cohen for being racist not only completely miss the point, they reveal their ignorant selves.

Pro-Cat Movie!
Even though this is a relatively old movie, I just saw "Stephen King's Cat's Eye" for the first time. It tells three separate stories, and how a tabby cat somehow parttakes in all of them. My favorite part is, though, the story where the tabby acts alongside little Drew Barrymore's character and protects her from the monster in her wall that tries to steal her breath. Of course, the mother is all against it at first, suggests that the cat is malicious, is only after eating the family parakeet and it is really the tabby that's after the little girl's breath. But in the end, the cat saves the day, slays the monster, and lives with the girl happily ever after. How nice! Despite the many chases, nothing ever happens to the cat and no animal dies in it (in front of the camera).

About Forgiveness

Forgiveness

I say it every Sunday just like all the other people standing next to me in the pews, “Forgive us our trespasses,” (which I often see in my mind as sneaking into my neighbor’s yard through our mutual hedge), or “forgive us our sins,” (which feels much worse), and the kicker, “as we forgive those who trespass, (sin) against us.” And then I hold next to my heart all the sins and trespasses I don’t forgive. Actually, there are only a few. But they are big ones. Here is one. Twenty-four years ago, a man killed my husband’s best friend--I will call him James--when James picked him up hitchhiking. I was the one who got the call, and I was the one who had to tell Vincent. I was the one who watched Vincent, my boyfriend of only a few months, the person I loved then and love now more than anyone else in my life, fall to the ground on hearing those words out of my mouth.

The man was crazy. He hanged himself in his prison cell some months after they caught him, after they found him with James’s silver cigarette case. I know his crime’s reverberations, like rings from a stone thrown into a pool of water. I know how the loss of James changed, shaped, distorted my husband’s life. I know what James’s death did to James’s widow and to her two boys. From his crime, we had to pick up the pieces. I know what this killer’s crime cost other lives; he does not.

And worst of all, what it cost James.

We never even got to talk to James’s killer about James’s last moments on this earth. The people who testified before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa say there was an odd intimacy between those who were murdered and those who did the murdering; that the person who did the killing knew what the victim said and looked like moments before he or she died. And the relatives of the victims wanted to know.

Jacques Derrida says that forgiveness is only really meaningful when we forgive what is unforgivable. He was speaking, as a Jew, of the Nazis.

I wonder if I had been able to see James’s killer, what might have happened. Had I visited this crazy man in prison, would I have felt something move in my heart?

In the documentary about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, A Long Night’s Journey into Day, the parents of a young American woman who was killed by a South African boy, visit the mother of the boy to speak to her, and to forgive him. Almost everyone in the audience immediately begins to weep. The act of forgiveness makes everyone cry.

A psychologist who worked with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission says that when you forgive a person, you restore that person to his or her humanity. This is done because the forgiving person understands that he or she could have committed the same crime. You understand you could have done it yourself. A story from the Nuremberg Trials: A man who had been a prisoner in one of the Nazi death camps was supposed to testify against another man who had been a guard in the camp. When the witness saw the guard in the courtroom, he fainted. All those around him thought it was because he was so horrified to see his oppressor again. But when the man regained consciousness, he said, “No. I fainted because I realized I could have been him.”

I know that forgiving James’s killer is for myself, blah, blah. I mean, he’s dead. Why do I hold this against him? Because I had to say, “Vincent I have something terrible to tell you. James has been killed.” We were standing in the driveway of the house we had only moved into a few months before, starting our new life together, as a young man and a young woman, full of hope. He fell against the fender of the car. Our new life, full of unfettered hope, was killed.

I want to take the man responsible for this, and rub his nose in it. I want to tell him of everything that happened because he pulled the trigger of a gun on a remote highway in southern California. I want to tell him of how James’s widow moved from Santa Barbara because she could not afford to stay here. Of his elder son’s face, five years old, on the day of James’s funeral. Of the boys growing up without a father. Want more, I will ask him? One of those boys later died, too. He hanged himself in the basement. I want to sit there and force this crazy murderer to feel what his work has wrought. But of course he did feel it. Something made him take a strip of cloth one morning and thread it through the light fixture in his cell.

And that does not feel like it resolves anything. Ashes in my mouth. And it would not have resolved anything had the state executed him. More ashes. What is done is done. More death cannot undo it.

And that’s really the point, isn’t it? If you don’t forgive, you don’t break the cycle of violence. It just goes on and on until there is no one left standing. In the Philadelphia Museum there is a room of drawings by Cy Twombly on Homer’s Iliad, his poem about the Trojan War. One is of a huge red cloud, filling most of a canvas that must be six feet tall. Scrawled underneath are the words, “It consumes everything in its path.”

The truly terrible part is that Jesus loves that man who died in his cell as much as he loves James. As much as he loves me. I actually get this. Or some part of me does. Jesus loves James’s killer because he knows that there is something more to him than that one terrible act. Just as there is more to James and more to me.

I think of Jesus tunneling back from the dead, a gossamer figure, thin as lace, threading his way through keyholes in locked doors. To say over and over, Forgive others. Forgive yourself. Take this second chance. Begin again.

And that, too, is the point. I must leave that young man falling to the ground, and the young woman standing helpless beside him, as if they were a photograph, in the past. James’s killer changed our lives. So be it. Even James’s widow and her surviving son have endured the unendurable. I must let my hatred and fury at James’s killer loose into the wind, into God’s heart, so that it lies in the past where it finally belongs. Forgiveness is a way to unburden oneself from the constant pressure of rewriting the past. It’s a gesture towards the future. Not for the future as a future in time, but for what the French call avenir, to open the way for what is to come, for the unexpected.

Today...
I like Ash Wednesday. Haven't always, or I suppose I was indifferent to it. When I was in high school and we had Ash Wednesday School Services, we all were always embarrassed to have the big black Catholic smudge on the forehead -- and envied the Protestant kids who didn't have it. All the girls went right to the wash room after mass...  I am not going to wash mine right off tonight. Unfortunately, I can only make it to and evening service, due to work, so in a way the ashes are bound to be washed off in a short while.

Many years ago, I came across the song that I am attaching below. It was sung in a Ash Wendsday service I attended, and that kind of states what that day means. Quite a grade change from a day that used to make you feel dirty and embarassed. And I'm not giving up candy, or any of those things people do. I suppose I'm gonna see how much I'm gonna get accomplished before Easter and see where I'm at then.

When I was Catholic, I was very gullible and naive, and easy to be manipulated. One "psycho" made my run a bible my mom sent me through the shredder just because it wasn't Catholic and because it was supposedly an evil thing in the house and it was your own fault should something happen to you. I officially left Catholicism, and despite the fact that I'm an Episcopalian now, I still consider myself Catholic. It's just that I am on my own now. People should think, and feel; not just listen and do. I know that God is, and that awareness remains with me. My prayers are unspoken, but they are, and they are known. I am in this awareness, and it feels good. I know I'm not alone.

Some people are always going to try to sell you their version of the truth. The ones I choose to listen to are the ones that share in mine and share with me theirs. They are also in this awareness, and they radiate it. I really haven't met that many of them, but those people radiate, and draw people. Others just scare me away.

Sin is a very strong word, and so is evil, and so is hate. I suppose these can be used to manipulate and to scare some people, and usually it's the good people that think they have the blackest souls. The difference is, really, allowing oneself to be forgiven for things past and to approach God with a sense of worthiness... I am worhty because you made me worthy, and I will love you always just as you have done to me.

Friggin!!!
It's still so cold outside. During the day it doesn't bother me so much, but at night... horrible. Luckily, it has been sunny during the day, but woe the clouds especially during this time of year. Do I ever forget to take my heart meds and my effexor, makes for a shitty day right there. But the sun helps a lot. So do my cats. I think they're natural "prozac" just by watching them. Last night, Pedro was warming my feet as I was going to sleep. (for some reason I am mistyping or not finishing every other word there, weird). Sometimes I pitty myself a lot. I have to be on so many meds just in the attempt of normality. My husband has his favorite word, "psychosomatic", but probably doesn't even know how to spell that nor makes an attempt to look beyond. It's horrible and wonderful at the same time in how minute a detail God made us, all those little chemical and hormones etc. making your life horrible or wonderful depending on the spectrum your at. For one thing, it teaches you wisdom, and appreciation for what you have. (Makes you feel like you're in an episode of "Saw" awaiting the next level.) There is a meaning to everything and a time for everything, so as usual, I am just waiting.

46 And seyde him, what man, lered other lewed,
47 That loveth comun profit, wel y-thewed,
48 He shal unto a blisful place wende,
49 Ther as Ioye is that last withouten ende.

50 Than asked he, if folk that heer be dede
51 Have lyf and dwelling in another place;
52 And African seyde, `ye, withoute drede,'
53 And that our present worldes lyves space
54 Nis but a maner deth, what wey we trace,
55 And rightful folk shal go, after they dye,
56 To heven; and shewed him the galaxye.

57 Than shewed he him the litel erthe, that heer is,
58 At regard of the hevenes quantite;
59 And after shewed he him the nyne speres,
60 And after that the melodye herde he
61 That cometh of thilke speres thryes three,
62 That welle is of musyk and melodye
63 In this world heer, and cause of armonye.

64 Than bad he him, sin erthe was so lyte,
65 And ful of torment and of harde grace,
66 That he ne shulde him in the world delyte.
67 Than tolde he him, in certeyn yeres space,
68 That every sterre shulde come into his place
69 Ther hit was first; and al shulde out of minde
70 That in this worlde is don of al mankinde.

71 Than prayde him Scipioun to telle him al
72 The wey to come un-to that hevene blisse;
73 And he seyde, `know thy-self first immortal,
74 And loke ay besily thou werke and wisse
75 To comun profit, and thou shalt nat misse
76 To comen swiftly to that place dere,
77 That ful of blisse is and of soules clere.

78 But brekers of the lawe, soth to seyne,
79 And lecherous folk, after that they be dede,
80 Shul alwey whirle aboute therthe in peyne,
81 Til many a world be passed, out of drede,
82 And than, for-yeven alle hir wikked dede,
83 Than shul they come unto that blisful place,

88 And to my bedde I gan me for to dresse,

92 But fynally my spirit, at the laste,
93 For-wery of my labour al the day,
94 Took rest, that made me to slepe faste,
95 And in my slepe I mette, as I lay,
96 How African, right in the selfe aray
97 That Scipioun him saw before that tyde,

99 The wery hunter, slepinge in his bed,
100 To wode ayein his minde goth anoon;
101 The Iuge dremeth how his plees ben sped;
102 The carter dremeth how his cartes goon;
103 The riche, of gold; the knight fight with his foon;

107 For I had red of African beforn,
108 That made me to mete that he stood there;

125 On eyther halfe, of ful gret difference,
126 Of which I shal yow sey the pleyn sentence.

127 `Thorgh me men goon in-to that blisful place
128 Of hertes hele and dedly woundes cure;
129 Thorgh me men goon unto the welle of Grace,
130 Ther grene and lusty May shal ever endure;
131 This is the wey to al good aventure;
132 Be glad, thou reder, and thy sorwe of-caste,
133 Al open am I; passe in, and hy the faste!'

134 `Thorgh me men goon,' than spak that other syde,
135 `Unto the mortal strokes of the spere,
136 Of which Disdayn and Daunger is the gyde,
137 Ther tre shal never fruyt ne leves bere.
138 This streem yow ledeth to the sorwful were,
139 Ther as the fish in prison is al drye;
140 Theschewing is only the remedye.'

374 That ever she among hir werkes fonde,
375 The moste benigne and the goodlieste;

418 The formel on your hond so wel y-wrought,
419 Whos I am al and ever wol hir serve,
420 Do what hir list, to do me live or sterve.

421 Beseching hir of mercy and of grace,
422 As she that is my lady sovereyne;
423 Or let me dye present in this place.
424 For certes, long may I not live in peyne;
425 For in myn herte is corven every veyne;
426 Having reward only to my trouthe,
427 My dere herte, have on my wo som routhe.

428 And if that I to hir be founde untrewe,
429 Disobeysaunt, or wilful negligent,
430 Avauntour, or in proces love a newe,
431 I pray to you this be my Iugement,

451 I love hir bet than ye do, by seynt Iohn,

470 Of long servyse avaunte I me no-thing,

475 In half a yere, al-though hit were no more,

498 The goos, the cokkow, and the doke also
499 So cryden, `kek, kek!' `kukkow!' `quek, quek!' hye,

501 The goos seyde, `al this nis not worth a flye!
502 But I can shape hereof a remedye,

537 That noon by skilles may be broght a-doun;
538 I can not seen that argumentes avayle;
539 Than semeth hit ther moste be batayle.'

540 `Al redy!' quod these egles tercels tho.
541 `Nay, sirs!' quod he, `if that I dorste it seye,
542 Ye doon me wrong, my tale is not y-do!
543 For sirs, ne taketh noght a-gref, I preye,
544 It may noght gon, as ye wolde, in this weye;
545 Oure is the voys that han the charge in honde,

562 The goos to speke, and in hir cakelinge
563 She seyde, `pees! now tak kepe every man,
564 And herkeneth which a reson I shal bringe;
565 My wit is sharp, I love no taryinge;
566 I seye, I rede him, though he were my brother,
567 But she wol love him, lat him love another!'

568 `Lo here! a parfit reson of a goos!'
569 Quod the sperhauk; `never mot she thee!
570 Lo, swich hit is to have a tonge loos!
571 Now parde, fool, yet were hit bet for thee
572 Have holde thy pees, than shewed thy nycete!
573 Hit lyth not in his wit nor in his wille,

575 The laughter aroos of gentil foules alle,

597 `Out of the dunghil com that word ful right,
598 Thou canst noght see which thing is wel be-set:
599 Thou farest by love as oules doon by light,
600 The day hem blent, ful wel they see by night;
601 Thy kind is of so lowe a wrechednesse,
602 That what love is, thou canst nat see ne gesse.'

603 Tho gan the cukkow putte him forth in prees
604 For foul that eteth worm, and seide blyve,
605 `So I,' quod he, `may have my make in pees,
606 I recche not how longe that ye stryve;
607 Lat ech of hem be soleyn al hir lyve,
608 This is my reed, sin they may not acorde;
609 This shorte lesson nedeth noght recorde.'

610 `Ye! have the glotoun fild ynogh his paunche,
611 Than are we wel!' seyde the merlioun;
612 `Thou mordrer of the heysugge on the braunche
613 That broghte thee forth, thou rewthelees glotoun!
614 Live thou soleyn, wormes corrupcioun!
615 For no fors is of lakke of thy nature;

617 `Now pees,' quod Nature, `I comaunde here;
618 For I have herd al your opinioun,
619 And in effect yet be we never the nere;
620 But fynally, this is my conclusioun,
621 That she hir-self shal han the eleccioun
622 Of whom hir list, who-so be wrooth or blythe,
623 Him that she cheest, he shal hir have as swythe.

624 For sith hit may not here discussed be
625 Who loveth hir best, as seide the tercelet,
626 Than wol I doon hir this favour, that she
627 Shal have right him on whom hir herte is set,
628 And he hir that his herte hath on hir knet.
629 Thus Iuge I, Nature, for I may not lye;
630 To noon estat I have non other ye.

631 But as for counseyl for to chese a make,
632 If hit were reson, certes, than wolde I
633 Counseyle yow the royal tercel take,
634 As seide the tercelet ful skilfully,
635 As for the gentilest and most worthy,
636 Which I have wroght so wel to my plesaunce;
637 That to yow oghte been a suffisaunce.'

638 With dredful vois the formel hir answerde,
639 `My rightful lady, goddesse of Nature,
640 Soth is that I am ever under your yerde,
641 Lyk as is everiche other creature,
642 And moot be youres whyl that my lyf may dure;
643 And therfor graunteth me my firste bone,
644 And myn entente I wol yow sey right sone.'

645 `I graunte it you,' quod she; and right anoon
646 This formel egle spak in this degree,
647 `Almighty quene, unto this yeer be doon
648 I aske respit for to avysen me.
649 And after that to have my choys al free;
650 This al and sum, that I wolde speke and seye;
651 Ye gete no more, al-though ye do me deye.

652 I wol noght serven Venus ne Cupyde
653 For sothe as yet, by no manere wey.'
654 `Now sin it may non other wyse betyde,'
655 Quod tho Nature, `here is no more to sey;
656 Than wolde I that these foules were a-wey
657 Ech with his make, for tarying lenger here' --
658 And seyde hem thus, as ye shul after here.

659 `To you speke I, ye tercelets,' quod Nature,
660 `Beth of good herte and serveth, alle three;
661 A yeer is not so longe to endure,
662 And ech of yow peyne him, in his degree,
663 For to do wel; for, god wot, quit is she
664 Fro yow this yeer; what after so befalle,
665 This entremes is dressed for you alle.'

666 And whan this werk al broght was to an ende,
667 To every foule Nature yaf his make
668 By even acorde, and on hir wey they wende.
669 A! lord! the blisse and Ioye that they make!
670 For ech of hem gan other in winges take,
671 And with hir nekkes ech gan other winde,
672 Thanking alwey the noble goddesse of kinde.

673 But first were chosen foules for to singe,
674 As yeer by yere was alwey hir usaunce
675 To singe a roundel at hir departinge,
676 To do to Nature honour and plesaunce.
677 The note, I trowe, maked was in Fraunce;
678 The wordes wer swich as ye may heer finde,
679 The nexte vers, as I now have in minde.

698 That I shal mete som thing for to fare
699 The bet; and thus to rede I nil not spare.
